Map a field I am new to

Week one in an unfamiliar domain, before you can tell signal from noise.

I am new to the field below. Give me a map, not a lecture.

1. **The core question** the field exists to answer.
2. **The main camps or approaches**, what each believes, and where they genuinely disagree rather than just use different words.
3. **Vocabulary**: ten terms I will see constantly, defined in one line each, including any that mean something different here than in everyday use.
4. **What is settled** versus **what is actively contested**. Be explicit about the boundary.
5. **Who to read**, and for each, what they are known for and what their critics say.
6. **How to tell a serious source from a shallow one** in this specific field.

Flag anything where your knowledge may be out of date, and say roughly when your picture is from.
