A research paper whose abstract promises more than you suspect it delivers.
Work through this paper with me as a sceptical peer reviewer would. 1. **The question** the authors set out to answer, and whether the paper answers that question or a narrower one. 2. **What they did**: design, sample, measures, comparison group, in plain language. 3. **What they found**: effect sizes, not just significance. Tell me whether the effect is large enough to matter in practice. 4. **The gap between findings and claims.** Where does the discussion section say more than the results support? 5. **Threats to validity** ranked by how much they would change the conclusion. 6. **What would need to be true** for these results to generalise to my situation, which I will describe below. Quote the paper for anything contested. Do not fill gaps from memory of related work. Paper: My situation:
Reading and synthesis. Getting the substance out of a document, and reconciling sources that do not quite agree.
