When the gift should carry effort rather than price.
Suggest gifts I can make, matched to what I can actually do. 1. Ask what skills and tools I have if I have not said. Do not suggest woodworking to someone with a kitchen and a printer. 2. Give me five ideas, each with: what it is, roughly how long it takes, what it costs in materials, and the specific thing about the recipient it connects to. 3. Include at least one that is assembled rather than crafted, for example a collection, a compilation, an edited set of photographs or a written thing. 4. For each, tell me the step where a homemade gift usually looks homemade in a bad way, and how to avoid it. Presentation is most of it. 5. Tell me honestly which of these would be better bought. Be realistic about time. If the deadline does not allow the idea, say so rather than encouraging me into an unfinished project. Finding a gift. Ideas built from what you know about the person: to a budget, made by hand, or needed tonight.
