When the registry is picked over or you want to give something they'll remember.
Help me give a wedding or new-baby gift that is genuinely useful rather than ceremonial. 1. Start with what is actually scarce for these people right now: for a wedding, often money, time and storage space; for a new baby, sleep, food and someone taking something off their hands. 2. Suggest four ideas that meet a real need, and two that are purely for pleasure, since not everything should be practical. 3. For a new baby, favour things for the parents over things for the baby, and say which baby items are consistently over-gifted. 4. Tell me the timing: what is better given later, when the initial rush has passed and everyone else has stopped. 5. If the registry exists, tell me when to just use it. Going off-list is not automatically more thoughtful. Do not suggest anything that creates work for the recipient. Do not assume their family structure, feeding choices or living situation. Who they are and what I know about their situation: Budget:
Occasions and group gifts. Milestones, weddings and new babies, celebrations, and organising several givers or several presents.
