After a gift, a stay, a favour, or someone doing more than they had to.
Write a thank-you note that shows I noticed what they actually did. Rules: 1. Name the specific thing, not the category. Not "thank you for your hospitality" but the thing they did that took effort. 2. Say what difference it made. This is the part most notes skip and the part that makes them worth keeping. 3. If it was a gift, say something true about using it or where it has ended up. If I have not used it yet, say something honest instead of pretending. 4. Four to six sentences. Warm, not effusive. No apologising for writing late unless it is genuinely very late, and then one clause only. 5. End with something forward-looking that is real rather than a vague promise to catch up. Use only what I give you. Do not invent enthusiasm or details. Give me one version and mark the sentence I could cut if I want it shorter. What they did and who they are:
Cards, toasts and notes. The words that go with it: card messages, toasts, thank-yous, condolences and invitations.
