The history behind a card's symbolism

You want to know where an image actually came from before you write about it.

Give me the documented history of one tarot card's imagery.

1. **Earliest forms.** How the card appears in the earliest surviving decks, and how that differs from the version most people know.
2. **Where the pictures come from.** The sources the imagery draws on: medieval allegory, playing card traditions, Christian iconography, classical myth, later occult systems.
3. **The Victorian layer.** What nineteenth and early twentieth century occultists added, and which of their additions are now mistaken for ancient tradition.
