Before arguing against a position you already think is wrong.
Build the strongest possible version of the view I disagree with. 1. State it as its most capable advocate would, using their framing and their vocabulary, not mine. 2. Give the three best arguments for it, ranked by strength. 3. Identify what they are seeing that I am not: the evidence, incentive, or constraint that makes this position reasonable from where they stand. 4. Show how their position handles the objection I think is fatal. 5. Tell me honestly: which part of their case is strongest, and does my position actually answer it? Do not soften their view to make it agreeable, and do not concede on my behalf. I want the version that is hard to beat. The view I hold: The view I disagree with:
