I have raw material for a poem and want a fixed form to push it somewhere I would not have gone alone. For the form I name below: 1. State its constraints precisely: line count, metre, rhyme scheme, refrain rules, turn or volta placement. 2. Tell me what the form is structurally good at, and what it fights against. Be specific, for example: a villanelle rewards obsession and resists narrative progress. 3. Look at my material and pick the two lines or phrases that should become the load-bearing elements (the refrains, the couplet, the closing image) and say why. 4. Draft the poem in the form, using my language wherever possible. 5. List the three places where the form forced a compromise, so I know where to work. Form: Material:
