A tool, standard or convention whose design looks arbitrary until you know the history.
Explain why the thing below exists, historically. 1. What was the situation before it? What specifically was painful? 2. What did people do instead, and why was that not good enough? 3. What problem was it built to solve, in its original context? 4. What constraints of that era are baked into its design and no longer apply? 5. What alternatives lost, and were they actually worse or just later? 6. Which of its oddities make sense once you know the history, and which are genuinely bad decisions that stuck? Be clear about which parts are documented history and which are your reconstruction. Do not present plausible narrative as fact. Subject:
Explaining a concept. Getting an idea across at the depth you need, with analogies, origins and first principles.
